  • Description

The Toyota Century convertible made its flawless first public appearance in the Celebration Parade to commemorate the enthronement of Emperor Naruhito on 10 November 2019. Purchased by the Japanese Cabinet Office under contract with a maximum budget of 80 million yen, the Century was delivered to the Imperial Household Agency on 26 September 2019. Based on the Century Royal, which is the official car for the carriage of state guests, the 3rd generation Century Hybrid was a production car that maintained its dignified luxury appearance, even in its open car form. In order to make it easier for the Emperor and Empress to be seen by onlookers from the roadside, the rear seats were raised 40mm and the backrests on the special ivory-white seats were tilted back 25 degrees. The ‘kamui’ (Eternal Black) body color is created with 7 coats, 5 bakes and 3 finishes with a final mirror finish for an ultimate brilliance and depth to reflect Toyota’s craftmanship. With no windows or top cover, the car was used at the Shrine Audience Ceremony at Ise Shrine after the Celebration Parade, after which registration was changed from the Imperial Household Agency to the Cabinet Office and the plates changed from ‘Emperor 10’ to ‘Shinagawa 359 11-10’. It is now open for public viewing at the State Guest House Akasaka Palace and the Kyoto State Guest House.
