With the high-spec K20A engine generating 225ps as a base, the newly designed engine with a special intake-exhaust system and cams remained naturally aspirated and increased output by +15ps to 240ps. In addition to special suspension, the chassis structure employed special Potenza RE070 RR tires jointly developed with Bridgestone and forged wheels with special rotors and brake pads that maximized performance from the genuine Brembo calipers.
The design concept was to develop a Type R machine that was even better than the Type R. The Mugen RR was based on the FD2 Civic R, which was regarded as the “Fastest FF Type R” at the time, and incorporated performance technology from Honda’s ‘Mugen’ works unit.
Carbon-aluminum exterior reduced weight by -15kg while realizing improved aerodynamics (negative lift on front & rear). The feature-packed interior also includes specially designed carbon Recaro seats.
While blitzing the average lap times at the Tsukuba Circuit, the Mugen RR clocked 1minute 06.68 seconds with a go-anywhere road car setup against normal circuit specs. With only 300 cars ever produced, all were sold out within 10 minutes of release. Proof of the legend is in the high price when these rare machines change hands.
