Description
■ Resin model
After making its debut as an on-road mid-size SUV, the Mitsubishi Outlander underwent a complete transformation into a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) with the release of its third generation in 2021 in Japan.
The robust form of the Outlander’s redesigned exterior featured Mitsubishi's signature Dynamic Shield front design which was further emphasized with muscular fenders and a slightly larger body size that increased its road presence. Unique design elements such as the D-pillar and floating roof inspired by the vertical tail of an airplane, added a distinctive flair to its styling.
The interior also underwent a dramatic evolution using significantly improved materials crafted with meticulous attention to detail. While the previous PHEV model offered only a two-row five-seat configuration, the third generation introduced a three-row seven-seat option that provided greater versatility for families and larger groups.
While retaining the 2.4-liter inline four-cylinder engine, the drivetrain was thoroughly upgraded with front and rear motors increasing output by approximately 40% from both motors and the drive battery. This delivered enhanced acceleration and longer electric range, both benchmarks of the EV driving experience.
The Twin Motor 4WD-based S-AWC (Super All Wheel Control) system was also refined for improved handling and precision response to driver control plus exceptional stability on various types of terrain.
A major update in 2024 brought further advancements to the drive battery that significantly increased the EV range and boosted the system’s maximum output. These improvements have taken the plug-in hybrid performance of the Outlander to new heights, establishing its reputation as a sophisticated and capable PHEV.
