The latest release in the Kyosho Original Mini Car Series is a 1/18 scale Ferrari 250 GTO. The real car that served as the model for this miniature is a competition model developed by Ferrari—one of Italy’s most renowned sports car manufacturers—with the aim of dominating the World Sportscar Championship. The name "250" refers to the displacement per cylinder (cc), while "GTO" stands for "Gran Turismo Omologato", the Italian term for GT-class homologation. Developed as the next advancement from its 250 GT SWB predecessor, the 250 GTO can be considered an evolutionary model. The 250 GTO began competing in the 1962 World Sportscar Championship. Built on a tubular steel frame, the car featured a 3.0L V12 SOHC dry-sump engine producing approximately 300 horsepower at the front, with a lightweight aluminum body designed by Sergio Scaglietti for optimal aerodynamics. With this combination of power and aerodynamics, the 250 GTO quickly came to dominate race circuits worldwide. As one of the most formidable front-engine, rear-drive competition models, the 250 GTO lived up to Ferrari’s expectations, winning back-to-back World Sportscar Championship titles in 1962 and 1963.
At the time, the FIA (Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile) regulations for the World Sportscar Championship required that at least 100 units be produced in a 12-month period for a GT-class car to receive homologation. However, only 36 units of the 250 GTO were ever built. Despite this, Ferrari was able to participate in the championship by arguing that the 250 GTO was a natural evolution of the 250 GT SWB. Since the combined production numbers of the 250 GT SWB and 250 GTO exceeded 100 units, the car was deemed eligible under the regulations. Due to its extreme rarity, back-to-back World Sportscar Championship victories, and its striking yet aggressive design, the 250 GTO remains one of the most iconic and legendary Ferrari models in history.

First launched in 1991, the Kyosho Original Mini Car Series showcases Kyosho’s long history of producing exquisite mini cars. Today, the series includes various scales such as 1/12, 1/18, and 1/43, but it originally started with the 1/18 scale. By utilizing this relatively large size for a diecast mini car model, the series has maintained its founding philosophy of accurately replicating the proportions of real vehicles while featuring high levels of detail in areas such as the engine and interior.
A die-cast model is a miniature car made using a body formed by pouring molten non-ferrous alloy into a metal mold. This type of model is well-suited for mass production. While it cannot achieve the same level of fine detail as a resin model, it offers the unique appeal of metal, including a solid weight, durability, and minimal aging over time.
