As the entry point into the Lexus range, the IS model goes head-to-head with European D-segment rivals such as the BMW 3 Series and the Mercedes-Benz C-Class. The current 3^rd generation model (2^nd generation in Japan) released in 2013 is a bold revision of the clean and sophisticated 2^nd generation, adding a more aggressive and dynamic design element that distinguishes the IS and makes it instantly recognizable. Although the first model to adopt a hybrid which is now a pillar of the Lexus brand strategy, the IS is still a premium sports sedan at its core but with economy and emissions credentials. There were three grades at the time of its release: IS300h hybrid (2.5ℓ in-line 4-cylinder + motor), the IS350 and IS250 with a V-type 6-cylinder engine (discontinued after a minor change), followed by the F-Sport. These were followed by the entry model IS200t with its 2ℓ in-line 4-cylinder turbo, making it the first Lexus FR car with a downsized turbo which achieved 245ps at a low 13.2km/liter (JC08 mode) with the super-efficient 8-speed AT. Combining exhilarating sports performance with superior environmental specifications made this a fun machine without the guilt. The IS200t underwent a major upgrade in 2020 and changed the name to IS300.
