After 17 long years, the Toyota Supra has been revived in a model jointly developed with BMW. Although based its BMW Z4 brother, the separate development teams worked in isolation on each machine in parallel to complete the original design and tuning. The exterior incorporates the DNA of successive Toyota sports designs such as a long nose / short cabin, rear fender reminiscent of earlier Supra’s, and double bubble roof incorporating lamps. The interior is typical of a sports car with a thin instrument panel on the top and bottom in a wide console. BMW's interface is used for the operating system and configuration items, but Toyota defines its influence with its signature meters, seats, and some operating systems.
The Supra is available with three types of engines: the traditional in-line 6-cylinder (3L turbo), and the in-line 4-cylinder (2L turbo) with two different outputs. The transmission combines the smoothness of an 8-speed AT together with shift speed and good response comparable to DSG. The platform is optimized for the Supra based on the latest BMW "CLAR". Adopting an aluminum / steel skeleton structure without using expensive materials, the body rigidity is about 2.5 times that of the Toyota 86 while exceeding that of the carbon monocoque Lexus LFA. The focus will be on the optimal ‘pure sports’ wheelbase / tread package as the 2420mm is shorter than the 86. Front double-joint struts combine with rear multilink suspension, and some models also have AVS that controls the damping force according to the drive mode and road surface conditions. In addition, the active differential optimally controls the lock ratio between the left and right rear wheels seamlessly in 0-100% range through an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch in conjunction with VSC. The driving setup was managed by Mr. Helwig Danens, one of the last disciples of Toyota’s master driver stationed at BMW, the late Mr. Hiromu Naruse. This rare model is the "matt, storm-gray metallic" specification established in the RZ, with a limited production of 24 units for 2019.
