Following on from the WRX STI Type RA and BRZ tS, this was the 3rd STI tuned model for the US market, limited to 209 units. The ‘S209’ was the first of the S series, which is the pinnacle of Subaru’s line-up. Introduced as the flagship model to establish Subaru brand credentials in North America, the S209 is equipped with the EJ25 turbo in place of the EJ20 used in the Japanese market. With the design concept to unify speed with driver control, fine tuning includes a special turbine that allows the accelerator to be applied with confidence and comfort in all situations, plus maximum output of 345ps which is the highest in STI history. The exterior features a range of parts unique to the American market including overfenders, air outlets and bumper side canards to accommodate wide 265/30R19 tires, reminiscent of the 22B STI cherished by Subaru loyalists. The shape of the front under spoiler and GT wing is similar to the S208, but the aerodynamic balance has been optimized. In addition, the WRX styled Bilstein suspension is equipped with large Brembo brakes. To ensure stability and turning control, a flexible tower bar developed for the Nürburgring 24 Hours race combines with a flexible front & rear draw bar and a weight-reducing carbon roof to lower the center of gravity. The result is the exceptional VAB model WRX.
