Fuji Heavy Industries (now Subaru Corporation) has brought together aerospace technologies and innovative ideas to create motor vehicles that are inherently different to other manufacturers. The Subaru line-up is long and distinguished, but the ‘Sanbar’ light commercial vehicle is one of the most unique and memorable. In production for more than 60 years, the Sanbar is currently produced for Subaru by Daihatsu on an OEM basis. The Sanbar was produced in-house at Subaru until 2012 and it is these models that attract the most attention on the used car market, particularly the final 6^th generation model. The old Sambar has deep-rooted popularity, not just within the Subaru fan base, because it embodies everything a light commercial vehicle should aspire to be. With optimal weight distribution (even when unladen) on the strong and durable independent ladder frame, rear engine drive for excellent traction, and a four-wheel independent suspension that delivers superior road handling, the Sanbar is the partner that workers in agriculture, forestry and fishing industries insist they cannot do without! Even though the Sanbar was a ‘light vehicle’ it was obvious Subaru’s development team didn’t compromise on cost and cut corners.
